'breastfeeding support' volunteering

As a parent you’ll know just how tough it can sometimes be. Getting started with breastfeeding can be challenging and isolating for lots of mothers. Our trained volunteers, who all have experience of breastfeeding, give free emotional support and guidance to help any new mum living in the Wirral area. By visiting mum in her own home, and offering support in groups and over the phone, Koala North West mentors represent a lifeline for many mums finding it hard to cope.

will i be the right sort of person to support a breastfeeding mum?

Koala North West mentors are all ages and from all walks of life. All we ask is that you have breastfed for a minimum of 3 months, have an interest in helping other breastfeeding mums, and can spare a few hours each week. We like to promote closeness and bonding for all mums and their babies. Your youngest child needs to be 12 months old before you consider offering your time to another family.

amy's story

After having my baby I started attending one of Koala North West’s breastfeeding groups. The volunteers were so friendly and welcoming, and going along soon became part of my weekly routine. I found the support from the group invaluable, and met other like minded mums to chat and share experiences with. Just knowing that there’s others going through similar things helps you realise that you’re not alone and makes you feel normal!

I soon decided that I’d like to join Koala North West, and to be part of the wonderful service that helps breastfeeding mothers. I felt so passionate about breastfeeding and being able to help others on their journey, I wanted to give something back after all of the support that I’d been given.

It was only upon starting my training that I realised the extent of what Koala North West does. Not only offering breastfeeding support, but also invaluable family support too. I found the training course informative and enlightening. It was wonderful to be taught by staff who are so dedicated to helping others and so passionate about what they do. They covered all areas needed in order to feel confident to volunteer.

Now I’m a fully fledged breastfeeding support mentor, I feel so proud of what I can do. We offer home visits and telephone support, along with running weekly groups in the community. Volunteering is extremely rewarding, and the staff always make it known how we are appreciated and valued as volunteers. I feel so proud to say that I’m part of Koala North West, and I look forward to continuing my journey with such a passionate and hard working team, helping support families across the Wirral.
